BIO
Most days you can find Silke in the forest or heather fields around her studio, located in the north of Antwerp. Shortly after her MA degree in jewellery at Sint Lucas KdG University, in addition to her own studio, she organised a show space for contemporary jewellery. First in Antwerp (Silke & the gallery 2005-2010) and later on abroad (Jewellery Sessions 2012-2014). From 2015 her main focus becomes teaching. Silke is convinced that analysis, reflection and writing can strengthen the making and presentation of jewellery and visual art.
STATMENT
“It is important that the visuals support the piece because it is not only a piece of jewellery. It is a visual communication that is illustrated with jewellery. And those two aspects must complement each other.”
As an artist, Silke works where form, sculpture, and visual communication overlap. Even though she is a jewellery artist and draws on jewellery and words, she recognised early on that in order to convey her idea’s the image became more important than the wearable object itself. Using her body as a site of enquiry, her work focuses on ownership, awareness, and the interplay of force and movement.
